Hystero Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy)

Tubal obstruction is a major cause of female infertility. About 20% of cases can be attributed to tubal factor. Blocked tubes create a mechanical barrier between the egg and the sperm thus making natural conception impossible.

Most commonly a tube may be obstructed due to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) often caused by Chlamydia infection. The rate of tubal infertility has been reported to be 12% after one, 23% after two, and 53% after three episodes of PID. Less common causes of tubal obstruction include previous uterine infections, infections after childbirth or termination, appendicitis and other pelvic infections. Intrauterine polyps and fibroids can also block one or both tubes.

While a full testing of tubal functions in patients with infertility is still not possible, testing of tubal patency (the condition of being open or unobstructed) is feasible. Tubes are not visible during usual X-ray or ultrasound investigation; therefore advanced investigation techniques are used.

HyCoSy (Hysterosalpingo Contrast Sonography) is an advanced ultrasound technique that enables specialists to evaluate uterine cavity and the patency of the tubes in the outpatient environment without using radiation. It is a non-invasive procedure taking just 15 to 30 minutes that gives immediate results.

The price is £310. For more information please call 075 8733 4750.
